Error reports are genuinely welcome. Requests for personal advice are not something I am able to answer.

Reporting a calculation error

This is the most useful message you can send. To make it actionable, include:

  • The exact inputs you used, including loan type and disbursement date
  • The figure the tool produced
  • The figure you expected, and where it came from

If the disagreement is with another calculator, it helps to say which one. Divergences are often explained by a rule one of the two tools has not implemented, and finding those is useful.

Reporting a policy error

If a rule described here is out of date or misread, please send the primary source. Federal student loan rules changed substantially in 2025 and 2026 and continue to move, and a citation to the regulation or agency page is worth far more than a link to an article about it.

What I cannot do

I cannot advise you on your own loans. I am not a licensed financial advisor, I have no access to your records, and answering individual questions would be both unhelpful and inappropriate. If you need a decision made about your specific situation, the people who can actually help are:

  • Your loan servicer, for anything about your actual balances, payment counts, plan eligibility or forgiveness progress. They hold the records.
  • The Department of Education PSLF Help Tool, for whether an employer qualifies.
  • A licensed financial planner or a student loan attorney, for advice on your situation. Some specialise in student debt specifically.
  • The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, if a servicer or lender has treated you improperly.

Partnership enquiries

Lenders are welcome to write, with one thing stated up front so nobody wastes time: partner links are suppressed entirely on any result where the numbers point away from refinancing, and no commercial arrangement changes what the calculator computes. That is not negotiable, and it is enforced in the code rather than by policy.
